During the coming winter months, its essential to understand how to boost your vehicle battery if need be.
And considering colder temperatures place an enormous amount of stress on vehicle batteries, a weakened battery may immobilize your Ford Edge – full stop. Therefore, having jumper cables at the ready and the knowledge to utilize this all-important tool do much to allay any seasonal concerns. Being prepared is a first step towards safety via Jim Schmidt Ford.
Boosting Your Vehicle Battery
Should your vehicle battery need boosting, you'll need a donor battery from another vehicle. Once flagged down, make sure the other vehicle is parked close to your Ford SUV, hood-to-hood but not touching. Then, complete the following steps:
- Take a red or positive clamp and secure it to the red terminal on the dead battery.
- Then, take the other red clamp and attach to the red terminal on the donor battery.
- Once the positive connections are made, take the black clamp and attach to the negative terminal on the dead battery.
- The remaining black clamp will then be secured to a metal grounding area on the donor vehicle.
- After waiting a few minutes, allow for charging to take place and then start your vehicle. Once started, remove the clamps in the opposite order – negative clamps first, then red clamps.
In being prepared, every Ford owner or lessee should have jumper cables within easy reach. And make sure gloves are worn throughout battery boosting. Each terminal may have had caustic residue to clean off with a metal brush before effecting the procedure.
